An Orange and Black editor, who requested to remain anonymous, suffered a broken fibula after an incident in the school parking lot.
It was the end of fourth period on Apr. 1, 2026 when the victim, a highly ranked member of the Orange and Black who currently serves on the newspaper’s editing staff, decided to go to lunch with O&B Online Editor Landon Ward. Little did he know, his life was drastically about to change.
“We went to get some donuts, and at the end of lunch, I just asked [Ward] to drop me off by my car. When I stepped out, the unthinkable happened,” the victim said.
Ward, who was piloting the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder, floored it, eager to get to class. The victim, who was sitting in the driver’s side passenger seat, had not stepped out of the car fully. His leg was sucked under the back wheel and ran over.
Ward allegedly thought nothing of it, and according to GJHS senior Kenneth Weimer, who was in the front passenger seat at the time this occurred, Ward was under the assumption that he ran over a plastic bottle in the parking lot and kept driving.
“I rarely go to lunch with Landon, and of course, on the one day that I do, he causes me to be disabled for the foreseeable future,” the victim said.
As a result, Orange and Black Editor in Chief and GJHS senior Eli Schultz has canceled all future print editions of the newspaper for the 2025-2026 school year.
“With our shortage of staff, after [the victim] was impaired, we cannot support the demands of a final print edition,” said Schultz.
Moreover, the victim claims that he will not be able to return to school until he is fully healed due to the building’s failing elevators.
This incident does not mark the first time there have been vehicle-related injuries in the school parking lot. In 2024, then GJHS sophomore Benjamin Landry allegedly had his toe run over by a Ford F-150 in the school parking lot. The driver ran away, and Landry did not catch the vehicle’s license plate in time.
While this latest incident involving the O&B editor is far from unique, it caused quite the controversy, according to both Ward and the victim. Landon Ward was fired following major pushback from Orange and Black staff.
