Grand Junction High School got their first shutout in four years to open the season with a dominating 48-0 victory against Rifle High School.
Having only won four games in the past three years, GJHS destroyed Rifle in the opener Friday, Aug. 30, in Stocker Stadium. This was the Tigers’ first opening win since 2019 and first shutout since 2020.
“I thought we had a great game. Our quarterback, Will [Applegate], helped us a lot. Our offensive line also did great,” said GJHS senior Mason Anderson.
GJHS racked up 232 rushing yards, easily outdoing their opponents who ended with only 22.
Senior quarterback Will Applegate made his presence known by being a big part of the Tigers’ win with three touchdowns. Applegate rushed for 79 and one TD and also passed for 80 yards and two more TDs.
Anderson caught two passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
“The team is a cohesive unit that works together very well,” GJHS football coach Landon McKee said.
The Tigers’ defense also scored twice on interception returns by junior A.J. Schlachter and senior Alex Martinez.
McKee said the team plans to continue to work and practice hard in pursuit of more victories.
The next game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Stocker Stadium, against city rival Central High School. Central lost 37-19 to Fruita Monument High School to open the season on Thursday, Aug. 29.
GJHS lost 21-13 to Central High School last year.
