The Grand Junction High School girls swim team featured eight GJHS swimmers going to state.
The team, which combines with Central High School and Palisade High School, featured eight GJHS swimmers who made state. The top performer was GJHS sophomore Taylor Moses, who competed in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay, finishing fifth and sixth overall, respectively. She also competed in the 100 freestyle, placing third overall, and 100 backstroke, also placing third overall.
“I thought it was really good. I did a lot better than last year, and I had a lot of fun with my teammates,” said Moses, who also qualified for state the season prior.
The other female GJHS swimmers who attended state include juniors Madalyn Dietrich and Bailey Pommarane, sophomores Abbey Buschhorn and Wren Wilcox, and freshman Ava Bormann.
“It was hard the first two years, and this year it was a lot better,” said Dietrich, the only diver representing the GJHS girls swim team.
Pommarane competed in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, placing 19th overall in the latter. She also competed in the 200 medley relay. Buschhorn competed in the 400 freestyle relay, placing sixth overall. She also competed in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Bormann competed in the 200 freestyle relay placing fifth overall, the 400 freestyle relay placing sixth overall, the 500 freestyle placing 14th overall, and the 100 breaststroke. Wilcox competed in the 200 medley relay.
“I hope that we have a bigger team and hopefully going to state again… high school swimming is a lot of fun,” said Moses.
The state tournament was held in the Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center in Thornton, Colorado, during Feb. 13 and 14. The team, coached by Jenn Burnett, placed 11th in the tournament, an improvement from previous season’s 14th.
