Video games bring individuals together, and in our high school, they provide a space for entertainment, lasting friendships and a break from the regular schedule.
GJHS teacher Joe Meinhart has been teaching math to students for 15 years. This year is the first time that he has been a sponsor. Ian Tenny shared the idea of having a Video Game Club, and invited Meinhart to sponsor it. Meinhart carries out the goal for this club, which is to bring people together who have a similar interest in video games.
They meet on Tuesdays at lunch in Room 222, where students can game online and in person with games like Mario Kart tournaments and Super Smash Bros.
“I love video games, and I love the students who get involved and have a good time,” said Meinhart.
The Video Game Club plans on receiving additional Nintendo Switches, allowing more students to play. When there are breaks or players are waiting to start, members often play computer games together.
“I had to practice getting characters for the [Super] Smash Tournament, and it was awesome because I made friends because of it,” said GJHS sophomore Liam Cote.
The Mario Kart Tournament has already ended, but the Super Smash Bros tournament began on April 7. Students are welcome to join the tournaments and to enjoy the social environment.
