Extending a tradition started by Grand Junction High School over 10 years ago, the 2026 Kindness is Contagious week (KIC) is set to take place on the week of Feb. 9.
For any returning GJHS students, KIC week is organized by the GJHS Student Council (StuCo) that aims to spread kindness and unity within the school. However, this year the tradition has spread to the entirety of Mesa County Valley School District 51.
“It’s really supposed to unify all the schools, not just our students in our school. We’re trying to get everyone on the same page with considering kindness as a whole school district, not just one school,” said GJHS social studies teacher Mark Wilson.
During KIC, StuCo will host various events throughout the week. One activity will be the distribution of stickers throughout different schools. This will take place by different schools creating stickers, and then giving them to other schools to distribute. Another important event that is going to take place will be a guest speaker who will discuss mental health.
“I’m excited for the speaker, because she’s going to have a meaningful message.” said GJHS junior Harrison Zentner, who is a member of student council.
Many students around the school are excited for the week due to the opportunity for kindness to be more widespread around the school.
“From what I know, kindness needs to be more widespread in our world. And if there’s a week to recognize it, I think I’m excited that maybe I’ll see a little more of it around Grand Junction High School,” said GJHS sophomore Maximus Kintz.
Crewnecks for KIC will be sold before and after school in the commons throughout the entirety of KIC week. There will be a spirit day dedicated to wearing these crewnecks, or green if you choose not to buy one.
