Grand Junction High School is continuing many of the popular annual October activities.
This year, the popular GJHS haunted house put on by the Advanced Leadership Team (ALT) will be hosted in the old 700 Art Building of the old school, located near the new baseball field and tennis courts. Once again, it is being held in an old and closed building like last year, when it was at the closed East Middle School.
“We chose the old art building because East Middle School was unavailable this year, but it actually worked well. The art building gives us more options and bigger rooms. The theme of the haunted house this year is horror movies, which, in my opinion, is very cool. So, in each room, students will be seeing a different horror villain in each room they attend,” said ALT leader GJHS teacher Brodie Smith.
The 700 Art Building is at 598 Tiger Ave., next to the new tennis courts. The entrance is located on the north side of the building. Tickets will be $5 cash or card per person to be able to enter the building (facing the baseball field). The exit of the building is on the south side (facing Jitters).
According to Smith, students will be able to wear costumes following GJHS rules. There will be no roughhousing or running allowed in the haunted house to keep students safe.
GJHS football plays an important home game at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in Stocker Stadium, against the Cheyenne Mountain High School football team. Students will be allowed to wear costumes, but will not be allowed to wear masks.
The Tigers have a 6-2 record and are 3-0 in the Class 4A I-25 league, made up of mostly Front Range teams. Only the league champion will qualify for the state playoffs. The Tigers won the league last year.
Since the band will be competing at state, there will be no marching band halftime performance.
According to GJHS history teacher and StuCo adviser Mark Wilson, StuCo (Student Council) will be hosting an event called “trunk or treat” for the special education students. The special education students will be able to attend an event at the GJHS community gym during 3rd and 4th hour on Halloween day, Friday, Oct. 31, which will provide candy and a decorated table that the students will get to rate.
On Halloween, the school dress code will allow students to wear costumes without masks, hoodies, face paint, or bring fake weapons to allow staff to easily identify students.
