Grand Junction High School’s Student Council is preparing for this year’s Homecoming Parade with the theme Rio Carnival.
Traditionally organized by StuCo, the parade brings together different sports and clubs to have floats and showcase what GJHS has to offer to the community during Homecoming week.
“The Homecoming Parade is another way to be like, we are all part of the same family, even if we’re not doing all the same stuff,” said GJHS senior and Committee Leader for the Homecoming Parade, Rania Quesenberry.
The parade was a tradition at GJHS until it got canceled in the early 2000s. As of 7 years ago, the parade has returned as a tradition that happens the week of Homecoming each year.
“I think it’s [the Homecoming Parade] a great opportunity for the whole community to see what we have to offer and a way to showcase and brag about our students,” said GJHS teacher and EDUKT (Empowering Dedicated Underrepresented Kids Today) club advisor Yaneth Gutierrez.
The Homecoming Parade will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, on Main Street in downtown Grand Junction. It will be followed by an afterparty at the front of Grand Junction High School from 7-9 pm.
The Homecoming assembly will take place on Thursday of Homecoming week. During the day, there will be an alternate schedule with five minute shorter class periods and no Academy Time.
The Homecoming football game will be against Durango High School at 7 p.m. Thursday, at Stocker Stadium. The theme is Into The Jungle. The Homecoming royalty will be announced during halftime along with the traditional chariot races.
The Homecoming dance will take place from 7-10 p.m. Saturday in the school gym. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
During Homecoming Week, the dress-up theme days are Tropical Day for Monday, Birds of a Feather (Twin Day) for Tuesday, Surfers vs. Bikers for Wednesday, Jorts and Jerseys for Thursday, and school spirit Orange and Black for Friday.
