Grand Junction High School students who love comics can experience the city’s annual Comic-Con event.
Comic Con is for fans of movies, TV shows, video games, and as the name suggests, comic books. Attendees frequently cosplay in costumes as their favorite characters throughout pop-culture. Visitors can buy and sell merchandise and comics at booths set up throughout the Grand Junction Convention Center on Sept. 19-20.
“I’ve been to Comic Con for the last 2 years. I like it’s a way people can express their art and media by dressing up. I get to celebrate a character from One Piece named Usopp, and it’s a fun time to hang out with friends and family,” said GJHS junior Diana Harvey-Soluna.
This gives students a chance to express their love for the fictional world. Visitors can make outfits from scratch, or just attend to see what it is like and think about what they can do next time Comic Con comes around. It will have a costume contest, guest speakers, video game rooms, and stands set up around the convention center for people to visit, according to the event host, Mesa County Public Library’s website.
“Comic Con is where people can celebrate pop culture and comic books. Comic-Con is looking for volunteers to help out. It’s kind of a fun thing to do, my kids went one year and had Harry Potter wands,” said GJHS librarian Pam Middlemas.
The 11th annual Mesa County Libraries Comic Con will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, in the Grand Junction Convention Center located at 159 Main St. Entry to the event is free with an MCL card or $5 without.
