Grand Junction High School Jazz Band is hosting its Spring Swing, celebrating spring with live music and dancing.
On May 8, on the GJHS patio, join the festivities from 7-9 PM for free dance lessons, desserts, and food trucks.
“It’s open to really anyone, the Swingin’ Sweets, which happened in December of last semester, was something very similar, there was a lot of dancing, a lot of sugar involved, and a lot of good music,” said Jazz III tenor saxophone player Zeppelin O’Brien.
The event is very inclusive and open to the public for anyone to come and enjoy the live music and festivities.
“They’re open to everyone, anyone can go. They’re free to get into, there’s live music, and it’s also open to the community, so it’s a very unique dance because you can have parents come join you, siblings, family members, friends from other schools, and so it’s basically just our way of celebrating the end of the semester,” said GJHS Band Director Isaac Lavadie.
This festival took place long before Lavadie began teaching and has a lot of history behind it.
“It used to be called the Tiger Tromp, that was back from the 50’s and the 60’s, and it was basically a school dance that was in the spring that a live jazz band performed,” said Lavadie.
Thanks to their sponsor, Colorado Technologies, LLC, they can host this dance to help uplift the community and celebrate the end of the semester and school year.
