Editor’s Note (Friday, Nov. 8, 12:12 p.m.): Due to weather and travel conditions, many playoff games around the state are being rescheduled. GJHS’ football playoff game is now scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.
The Grand Junction High School football team is on a five-game win streak and is hosting a state playoff game for the first time since 2011.
The Tigers will be competing in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs against Longmont High School at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, in Stocker Stadium (originally scheduled for Saturday). GJHS qualified for the 4A playoffs by winning the I-25 Conference championship and ending the regular season with 9 wins to only 1 loss to earn the No. 9 playoff spot.
“We’re really excited for the opportunity to play Longmont. We’re practicing and preparing every day and with all the hard work the team’s put in this season I think we have a good chance at winning this Saturday, ” said GJHS football coach Landon Mckee.
The No. 24 Longmont Trojans have a 3-7 record heading into the playoffs. Longmont lost 40-14 to Central on Oct. 25 while in comparison GJHS beat its city rival Central 35-14 on Sept. 6.
The Tigers have their most wins in a season since posting an 11-1 record in 2011. Grand Junction’s lone loss on the season was to No. 6-seed Durango (7-3). The top 8 teams out of 24 in the Class 4A playoffs receive a first-round bye.
Central (4-6) is the No. 20 seed in the playoffs and travels to play No. 13 Rampart (6-5).
The winner of the GJ-Longmont game will move on to play No. 8 Ponderosa (7-3) in the second round in Parker.
