With the new Grand Junction High School building comes many floors that are hard to access for some students.
Three elevators located throughout the school help students who can’t access upper floors by stairs. They are located in the education wing hallway, near the commons and near the auditorium.
“At the old school they used to have a key that students with medical disabilities or medical situations were the only ones that could use the elevator. Well, it’s still true here,” said GJHS assistant principal Josh Warinner.
For some students, these elevators are an essential feature of the school. Without them the second and third floors would be unreachable. Students also find the new elevators to be an improvement over the old one.
“I personally really like them. I didn’t like the other one,” said GJHS junior Liam Denali.
As with the old school, students without permission are not allowed to use the elevators. Students are allowed to use it if they have a medical disability or are physically unable to use the stairs.
“It’s very important for some of my students. We have a lot of students that utilize wheelchairs to get around the building, so having elevators is very important,” said GJHS teacher Mike Meyer.
