Grand Junction High School now has a video news broadcast which students can get all of the weekly announcements from.
Advanced Leadership Team (ALT)’s broadcast news is planned to be released every other Thursday during Academy Time, according to the announcement by GJHS Principal Jory Sorensen on Thursday Sept. 4. The video news broadcast will be a five-minute summary of the daily announcements for all students.
Each broadcast contains information necessary to inform viewers about what is happening throughout the week along with entertainment from ALT to keep students engaged. This is so students will know when and where school activities are taking place so they can go out and show support for the Tigers.
Students at GJHS have expressed concern regarding regular daily announcements during the start of third period.
“Over the last couple of years in the building, some upper classmen as well as teachers have noticed a decline in engagement with morning announcements. Some students aren’t in class for them, and sometimes overall it is hard to hear them,” said GJHS senior and ALT member Gabriella Noble.
ALT saw this as a problem and decided that something had to change. Rather than replacing the daily 3rd period intercom announcements overseen by Student Council, they brought the distribution of announcements to another form of media as well.
ALT members believe the new format will better connect to students.
“If we have faces on the TVs to where [students] can watch it, then they can get their news more fluently. And I think it’s just a better way to spread the information,” said GJHS ALT Coordinator Brodie Smith.
ALT premiered its first news broadcast during Academy Time on Thursday, Aug. 14.
“Our first video was just a let’s-see-how-we-can-do-it off a phone. Now we’re going to use real equipment,” said Smith.
With help from GJHS video production teacher Steve Brown, ALT plans to improve their news by using enhanced equipment such as new cameras and green screens to improve production quality and entertainment for students.
