Past spirit day themes have been chaotic and just straight up weird.
The Tuesday after Valentine’s Day, GJHS held spirit week, and the theme of one of the days was “stop light.” However, the theme didn’t follow the typical stoplight colors: red if you are taken, yellow if it’s complicated, and green if you’re single. Instead, it was red if you are taken, pink if it’s complicated, and white if you are single. I believe they should have chosen the typical stoplight colors of red, yellow, and green, or just come up with an entirely original and less confusing name for the theme.
In the past, the Spirit Day themes have been out of the ordinary and not fun and engaging. Last year, one of the themes was “Toes out Tuesday.” It is just straight-up weird.
“There were feet everywhere. It was terrifying,” said GJHS sophomore Bella Hoch.
There is a theme for every football game and other school sports games, but some have been repeated. For example, a constant theme for football and basketball games is whiteout and blackout. Again, this is fun, but it can get boring when repeated.
The themes are harder to participate in because many people do not know there is even a spirit day theme.
“I feel that they’re not announced as much as they were, especially last year. There were posters everywhere, and teachers had posters on their boards. But because no one listens to the announcements, no one knows about the spirit days,” said GJHS junior Gracie Bruck.
Every Friday during spirit weeks, the theme is Orange and Black to show off our school’s colors. However, due to it being every single Friday, it can get boring quickly.
“Keeping it the same all the time is kind of boring, so I think changing it up would be nice,” said GJHS junior Amirra Dolobacs.
The student council isn’t to blame for this problem. Many of the themes suggested by students are put down by the admin, which has caused the constant repetition of themes. The admin has made it a rule that every Friday has to be Orange and Black Friday.
“We make a list of themes and send them to the admin, where they get shut down a lot. We try to think of themes that will get the most people to do it and will be the most fun, ” said senior class president Dermot Lynch, a senior.
