Grand Junction High School members of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) earned the opportunity to compete in the state competition in Denver.
After an excellent performance at the District 9 FBLA competitions held Feb. 3 at Colorado Mesa University, an outstanding 28 out of the 38 GJHS FBLA students placed in the top four of their respective categories and qualified for state.
FBLA, which has been at GJHS for over three decades, is designed to give students the opportunity to learn real-world business and career skills.
With more than 230,000 members, it is the largest business Career and Technical Student Organization in the world.
GJHS business teachers Suzanne Dunlap and Brady Weston lead the successful FBLA program.
“If you want to be in the business field or computer science field or if you want to be a leader of something, FBLA teaches you that,” Dunlap said.
FBLA offers other incentives for students as well. During their upcoming state trip in April, students will be staying at the world-famous Gaylord Hotel in Denver. If they perform well enough, students may even earn a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., for nationals.
GJHS junior Terrence Liu joined FBLA to strengthen his business skills, but many students are just looking for a group to be part of.
“If you are just looking for a club to join, FBLA is still good because you don’t have to compete,” he said.
There are no immediate requirements to join. FBLA meets every Thursday at lunch in Room 225.
