Ice hockey in the valley has finally made it to the big leagues.
Caprock Academy’s hockey team has transitioned from a junior varsity to a varsity level program this year, a huge step for the players and schools involved. Caprock Academy has had a hockey team open to all schools in the valley for two years, providing an opportunity for players across the valley to come together and compete.
This season, the roster has 21 players, with four players representing Grand Junction High School: sophomore Eli Haan, sophomore Kody Knott, sophomore Hayden Poe, and senior Gordie Steidel.
The Caprock Eagles finished with a record of 3-16, concluding their season with a hard fought 5-3 loss to Liberty High School. Home games were played at River City Sportplex in Grand Junction.
Despite having a tough season, Caprock has been competitive in the 4A Mountain League, going against Glenwood Springs, Summit, Steamboat Springs, Durango, Battle Mountain, Crested Butte, and Aspen. With a record of 2-12 in league play, Caprock finished 7th.
“On the record [the season] wasn’t great, but we definitely developed a lot of teamwork,” said Poe.
Although results didn’t show significant victories, the players have worked to improve their skills.
“Definitely want a few more wins, but…developing younger kids and making sure they are ready for the next few years,” said Poe.
Despite tough losses, the team’s morale stayed high.
“[The environment] was super cool…We got along really well,” said Knott.
Knott led the team in assists (5) and points (11).
The experience and lessons gained this year will serve as a stepping stone, and as the program continues to grow, so too will the expectations for future seasons.
