This season has been one of notable growth and progress for the Grand Junction High School girls’ basketball team.
Under the leadership of first-year coach Mary Doane, who made the transition from Central High School to GJHS, the team has embraced a renewed sense of unity and determination. Doane, who previously taught business and was involved in the P-Tech and workforce learning programs at Central High School, now continues to teach business at GJHS.
Doane said, “There was not just one reason for my switch, but it was a family choice and what was best not only for me as a coach but for my kids. They’ll be here in a couple of years. There were a lot of reasons, but it was my choice. I can tell you it’s the right choice, and it’s been a good transition so far.”
Doane has coached for over 24 years. She first began as a college basketball coach after an injury.
Doane said, “I think it’s going really well. Obviously, you want more wins, but I think we have a culture of community, unity, and selflessness that has been instilled with our girls. They have a ways to go, but there’s bonding and an understanding of what’s important.”
As of now, the team holds a balanced 8-8 win/loss record. The team has won games against Palmer, Rifle, and Central High School.
“[This season] is going pretty good. We’ve definitely made a lot of progress, and I feel like I’ve made a lot of progress myself too, especially in my confidence. My confidence is higher,” said varsity player Maycie Childs, a senior at GJHS.
The players on the team have noticed a shift in the team’s dynamics not just on the court, but off the court as well.
Childs said, “This year, I feel like it’s the best we’ve ever been. There’s been no drama, no problems, and I feel like we all play for each other and with each other.”
As the season progresses, the girls’ basketball team continues to make progress, not just in terms of skill, but in building a cohesive and supportive team culture, and their commitment to improve on and off the court.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of girls’ basketball at GJHS. To celebrate, the Tigers will be hosting a special game to commemorate the occasion on Friday, Feb. 21.
