The GJHS wrestling team is deep into their season and the top wrestlers of the year are showing through.
The top Junction wrestler of the 2025 Rangely Invitational was Spencer Penkaty, a senior who placed second after winning a match by unanimous decision. Penkaty also finished top 10 in the Tournament of Champions on Jan. 9-10, placing 6th overall in the 165-pound weight class.
The star of the tournament at Uintah, GJHS Junior Alan “Smith” Delimont, was the only Junction varsity wrestler to make it to the second day of the tournament. Delimont’s current record is 6-4 on the year and he scored 6 team points over the course of the tournament. Delimont placed second in the 150-pound weight class.
“I think Smith (Delimont) has been the most consistent this year,” said Penkaty.
Delimont has placed in 3 out of 5 events he has participated in according to Trackwrestling, and he has scored the 6th most points-per-match for the team this year.
“He’s very passionate about the sport and just a great guy overall,” said GJHS sophomore wrestler Kyerasu Wall.
The only Junction wrestler to place in the 2024 Western Slope Showdown was Wall, who placed 6th in his weight class. Wall was defeated in the 5th-place match in the Varsity 106-pound class.
There are five GJHS wrestlers on the School District 51 Phoenix combined girls wrestling team. The team is ranked No. 1 in the state, and they placed second in state last year. The GJ wrestlers are freshmen Clara Kempton, Vivika Gilder and Willow Ferris, sophomore Azzariyah Truitt, and junior Rya Burke.
