Due to hacking, many Grand Junction High School students have recently lost access to their Google accounts.
Starting roughly Oct. 24, many students began losing access to their School District 51 accounts. Several students reported receiving certain emails that they soon clicked on in a scam known as phishing.
“There are phishing emails and people are clicking on them. I know one person who clicked on one who said that it was from district administration, and it confused them. It sent out a filter to change the password,” GJHS librarian Pamela Middlemas said.
Clicking on the emails has altered their passwords and effectively blocked them out of their accounts. Soon after, they got back into their accounts after seeking help.
When the hacked students got their accounts back, their passwords were changed to make it harder for the hacker to get back into the accounts.
“I tried logging in one day, and it said that my password changed. I went to a teacher who said there was some security break. Then I said ‘oh, that’s what happened to mine,’” GJHS senior Maddox Wolfe said.
Other than changing passwords, there isn’t a known solution to prevent this issue from happening again, according to Middlemas.
