The boys golf regular season is over now and the Junction team secured a spot in the Colorado Class 4A State Tournament.
During the regional match on Oct.1 the Tigers collectively shot a 217, which was the best score in all of Colorado. The individual scores were just as impressive with senior Ky Korte shooting a 6-under 65, the best in the 4A regional and the second best in Colorado. Senior Jack Kaul and junior Hunter Simmons carded a 70 and a 72. All three golfers have made a habit of shooting under par, but even with such good scores the margin of error is slim.
“The boys have been working hard for a long time for this moment and they’re excited about playing in the state golf tournament at a golf course that they’re familiar with,” said GJHS Dean of Students and boys golf coach Tom Lefebre.
On September 16-17, three GJHS golfers played against Fruita, Montrose, and Erie to determine the teams moving on to the regional tournament. The first round was held at Tiara Rado Golf Course on Monday, Sept. 16, and the three Junction golfers – Kaul, Korte, and Simmons – spent the two-day event climbing up the leaderboard.
During the event, the weather intensified into strong winds and medium to heavy rain that severely hindered some competitors, but not the GJ golfers.
The second round was held at Bridges Golf Course in Montrose on Sept. 17, and the rain had died down, but the wind was still nearly as intense as the previous day. Simmons and Kaul finished in the top 5 with Simmons’ final score being 145. Kaul’s final score was 150. Korte finished seventh with a score of 156.
“We’re fortunate to have made it this far and I’m glad we get to host state, even if we don’t make it all the way,” said Korte.
With the long-awaited state tournament around the corner, the golfers are determined to take home the title. Junction finished second in the state tournament last year.
