High-achieving students at Grand Junction High School were rewarded for their hard work the previous school year.
GJHS held the academic lettering ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 19, in the auditorium. There were two separate times for the ceremony, one for sophomores and the other for juniors and seniors. This was a new system created due to the large numbers of students who were awarded academic letters.
“I’m happy I got an academic letter because it’s a good achievement,” said sophomore Zach Nelson.
There are a few requirements to get an academic letter. These requirements ensure that academic letters reflect success in student’s academics.
“Students have to earn a term GPA, both fall and spring, of 3.5 or higher and be a full-time student,” said GJHS counselor Alicia Hampton.
Academic letters can be encouraging for students to continue working hard. They are often used as a goal to work towards.
“It makes me feel that I’m doing great and I need to keep doing things so I can get an award,” said GJHS junior Sushant Maharjan.
There were 463 students who received an academic letter. Of those, 140 students maintained a 3.5-3.74 GPA, 136 maintained a 3.75-3.99 GPA, and 187 maintained a 4.0+ GPA.
