This year’s Homecoming theme, Aladdin, mirrors the Arabian theme used in the 1950s for one of Grand Junction High School’s first themed homecomings.
This is GJHS’ first homecoming in the new building, so dance organizers Student Council though it was only fitting it shares a similar theme as the first themed homecoming in the old school, over half a century ago.
Like years past, there will be several traditional events leading up to the dance during homecoming week:
- Thursday, Oct. 3, will be the homecoming parade downtown Grand Junction at 6 p.m. followed by the after party — a tradition started last year in place of the homecoming bonfire, outside of GJHS. The Lost Junction Band, which includes former GJHS students, will play at the afterparty again this year and there will be food trucks.
- Friday, Oct. 4, will be the homecoming pep assembly at the end of the school day (2-3:15 p.m.), as well as the homecoming football game against Gateway High School at 7 p.m. in Stocker Stadium. The student section theme is Into the Jungle.
- Spirit week will be from Monday, Sept. 29, to Friday, Oct. 4. There will be a poll posted to GJHS STUCO Instagram (@gjhs.stuco) for students to decide what the spirit day themes should be.
- The dance will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, from 7 to 10 p.m. in the gym.
This year, there is something untraditional about the dance itself. Due to the newness and quality of the gym floor, students will not be allowed to wear heels or hard soled shoes such as cowboy boots to the dance. Those who attend the dance must wear sneakers/tennis shoes.
“It doesn’t matter, most girls change out of their heels anyways,” said GJHS junior Beck Sharp.
In addition to the dance floor, there will also likely be a separate area for students to get away from the noise and chaos.
“I’d like to open up some more facilities, like a spot for people to chill and have a snack as opposed to just the loud dance floor, so you and your date could sit down and talk a little bit actually,” said GJHS social studies teacher and student council advisor Mark Wilson.
The Homecoming dance will be Saturday, Oct. 5.
