Grand Junction High School construction continues, mostly focused on demolition and new sports fields being built.
The old school that continues to be torn down right now will eventually end up as the location of the new GJHS baseball field, soccer field, and six tennis courts. Next to the football field and recently renovated track field, where there is currently a large pile of dirt at the north end of the school property, they will end up building a field for the marching band.
“When the old school is done getting torn down by sometime in June they will start building the new fields,” said GJHS athletic director Shawn Marsh.
The wrestling room and gymnasiums are up and running as part of the new $144.5 million GJHS building for those students who play sports like basketball and volleyball.
“The new gym is way better than the gym in the old building because it feels just clean and nice but the only drawback is that I miss the big balcony that was included back in the old gym,” said GJHS sophomore Jett Viet.
There are also some new upgrades with the main court and the track field.
“The basketball court actually has a new upgrade with a new scoreboard feature, being able to show highlights and replays in game,” said GJHS principal Jory Sorensen.
The new track gained some new features that you can already see on the track, like the new pole vault pit area for the track players. They are still adding some features like a throwing area and shot put.
The first of the new sports fields and courts will be six new tennis courts to replace the courts torn out during the construction of the new building in 2022, the tennis courts will be placed near the old art building.
The baseball field will be built soon after and it will replace the Science and English buildings next to the bus loop of the old school.
The third will be the soccer field, another sports field that we have never had. It will be placed near the corner 5th Street and Tiger Avenue.
