Who doesn’t love throwing colorful chalk at your friends? For many years, the color dance has been a part of Grand Junction High School’s tradition.
At the old building, the dance was held in the parking lot behind the school. With the new building completed and ongoing demolition of the old school, the color dance will be held outside by the bus loop this year, according to ALT teacher Brodie Smith.
The color dance will take place Saturday, Sept. 7. Tickets are $12 for presale and $14 at the door. However, for freshmen, admission to the dance with your ALT leader will only cost $10. Bags of chalk will be $1 each.
The original plan was to hold the dance near the back alley outside the weightroom, however more kids were estimated to attend so the location was changed.
The color dance is planned by the GJHS Advanced Leadership Team, led by Smith as of this school year. With this change in leadership also comes a few changes to both the program and the color dance.
“This year [ALT is] incorporating more interactive activities to try and keep kids engaged for the entirety of the dance,” said Smith.
These activities will include competitions to win free chalk and a closing event 30 minutes before the dance ends.
“My hope for the color dance this year is that students enjoy a dance that is different from all the others, and hopefully will bring new students,” said Smith.
ALT will also host a tailgate party for the homecoming game, pumpkin carving and costume contests for Halloween, the Iron man Event (seniors vs. juniors boys volleyball), Powderpuff (seniors vs. juniors girls flag football), an Easter Egg hunt around campus, an Ice cream social, BBQ, and more to come as the year goes by.
