Colorado adds flag football as a HS sport

The Colorado High School Activities Association has voted to make girls flag football an official High School sport

CHSAA and the Denver Broncos held a press conference on May 8 celebrating Colorado joining 10 other states in recognizing flag football as a varsity sport.

Since flag football is now recognized as a high school sport, Mesa Valley School District 51 would have to account for participation, travel, schedules, and school funding if schools decide to participate. The flag football season will be during the fall sports season.

GJHS Athletic Director Steve Woytek explained that adding a new sport in the valley, such as flag football, may be challenging because of lack of competition, in the case that other schools in District 51 choose not to participate. Flag football teams may need to travel far distances to compete while it is a growing sport.
