GJHS students crowd outside of the old school building to do an activity in their Academy classes. The community will be welcomed to tour the 1956 building one last time on Saturday, April 6.

Grand Junction High School staff, students, and alumni are preparing to pay tribute to the old building.

As the year ends, a new era dawns over Grand Junction High School. But with the excitement of the new building comes the nostalgic sadness that follows the anticipated demolition of the old building. The old building, dating to 1956, is full of memories and many alumni want one last chance to say goodbye to the building that shaped their teenage years.

“A lot of people from the community have called asking if they could see the old building before they tear it down. There’s a lot of nostalgia around this building,” said GJHS principal’s secretary Karen Provenza.

This is why GJHS is hosting a final farewell event on Saturday, April 6. Starting at 2 p.m. with teacher talks in the auditorium, then guided tours from 2:45 to 4 p.m. After that, the event will open up to an open house setting. The final farewell tour will finish with one final walkout at 5 p.m.
