Five students from Grand Junction High School were honored in the 2023-24 All-State Choir.
The five Grand Junction selections were seniors Samuel Guddat, Josie Winn, Emily Larsen, Nicholas Berry, and junior Gracelynn Stone.
“We get auditions involving a prepared solo and then skills such as doing intervals, scales, and sight reading. And combined those give you your total score,” GJHS senior Samuel Guddat said.
The Choir Assembly is held at the Colorado Convention Center yearly and can be viewed in person or by CD and DVD, which can be purchased on the Colorado All-State Choir website. The 2-day event took place in Denver from February 8th to 10th. It is designed to help already talented choir students get even better at what they do. Their parents can enjoy an extra concert with participants from all around the state, also.
“I think it helps make you more confident and kind of just grow your abilities and get new perspectives from hanging out with other, better people,” said Guddat.
The environment for the All-State Choir is supposed to be a friendly environment where you can learn more about the choir and hone your singing skills. There is no grade for these performances, and it is strictly for experience.
“This experience is great for anybody who wants to learn more about choir, and if they enjoy singing it’s good for them to sing for another set of ears,” said GJHS choir director Brad Hirsh.
This is an audition event, much like the all-state orchestra and band, so any choir student can apply. Next year’s auditions will be from October 6-7 and the deadline for audition registration is due on September 13th.
