Grand Junction High School and Fruita Monument High School are going up against one another in a basketball game in order to raise money for charity.
This event is organized by both school’s student councils. The tournament will take place at 7pm Wednesday, Nov. 1 at Grand Junction High School. Whichever school has better attendance gets paid for however many more students show up. For example, Junction will pay a dollar per Fruita student and Fruita pays a dollar per Junction student.
“It’s for fun and for charity,” said GJHS math teacher Russell Gregory, who will be participating in the game.
Some of the other Junction staff participating are art teacher Joseph Graham, ELA teacher Steve Brown, science teacher Matt Hurni and GJHS girls basketball coach Sydni Brandon.
The money will go towards a charity of the winning school’s choice. It is important to note that this is a friendly competition. Jory Sorenson, GJHS Principal, said that it is important to remain friendly and sportsmanlike. Sorenson added that this game is an important step towards peace between both schools who have a history of unsportsmanlike behavior in the past.

I can say with 100% confidence that there is no way to repair sportsmanlike behavior with Fruita. We’d sooner throw ourselves into a cactus bed. Of course, it’s not to imply that I will antagonize Fruita, it’s just me saying that it’s impossible to get on good terms with Fruita. We were literally chosen athletic rivals, and there’s nothing anybody can do about it.
