Grand Junction High School plays against Central High School in a city rivalry game that is only heating up on Thursday, Sept. 7.
Over the past seven years Grand Junction has won 3 games and lost 4 to Central High School. Last year, Central won the matchup 25-13.
“It is really big right now and we are both saying stuff to each other. It is starting to get out of line. It’s a really big rivalry,” said GJHS junior quarterback Will Applegate.
Grand Junction enters the game with two losses to open the season. Central has a record of 1 win and 1 loss.
The student section theme for the game is Barbie vs. Ken.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Stocker Stadium.

I would argue that the Tigers/Wildcats rivalry is worse. They’ve been around for about the same time, they’ve been athletically similar throughout the years, the controversy that occurred in the late 2022 basketball games, and the fact that we have a 50% or so chance of losing to Fruita. Against Central, we’re doomed. We may have a mutual hate for both high school athletic teams as Tigers, but we hate Fruita because they hate us. We hate Central because we can barely score against them. You can’t have a rivalry between a mouse and a falcon.
