GJHS qualifies seven wrestlers to state
With COVID-19 restrictions removed the GJHS wrestling team will be able to send seven wrestlers to state.
The GJHS wrestling team has been on a high note for this season with the 16 boys on the varsity team and 24 on the JV team.
This year we will be sending seven boys to state after the Tigers placed third in regionals held Saturday, Feb. 12, in Aurora. That is an increase from just two wrestlers making state last year due to COVID restrictions.
Sean Henry, art teacher and assistant wrestling coach at GJHS, said, “If we compete with all of our effort we have been giving then we will do well at state.”
Murphy Harris (113 pounds), Andrew Leyba (126), Colton Romero (132), Peyton Harris (138), Able Martinze (145), Cale Moore (152), and Micah Kenney (160) all finished in the top four at regionals to qualify to compete in the state tournament starting Thursday, Feb. 17, at Ball Arena in Denver.
Henry said last year only the top two finishers in each weight category at regionals qualified for state due to COVID, reducing the GJHS number competing in Denver.
The GJHS wrestlers who competed in regionals (weight class) and their finishing places were:
Danell Hamilton (106) – DNP
Murphy Harris (113) – 3rd
Landon Scarbrough (120) – 6th
Andrew Leyba (126) – 2nd
Colton Romero (132) – 4th
Peyton Harris (138) – 3rd
Able Martinez (145) – 2nd
Cale Moore (152) – 3rd
Micah Kenney (160) – 3rd
Dominic Jones (170) – DNP
Gage Reis (182) – DNP
Cole Atkinson (195) – 6th
Austin Curfman (220) – 4th (lost wrestle back for 5th)
Jack Banks (285) – DNP
