GJHS boy’s soccer team takes first win

The Grand Junction boys varsity soccer team took a win August 23, at the newly renovated CMU athletics field.

The boys won 3-2 against Palisade. Starting off strong Junior, Matthew Silzell scored the first goal of the game and the season for the Tigers.

“It was my first goal on varsity, even though it wasn’t the most amazing goal, I still felt really good about it,” said Silzell.

Mason Sanders and Gerardo Becerra scored the other two goals to lead the Tigers in the win to improve their record 1-1.

Despite not having a stable head coach this year, the boys have definitely come back from their first game loss to Rock Canyon. Head coach Jonathan Pando is out as of right now and assistant coach Marcel Mavangulu is stepping in.

“We definitely have to focus more at practice now,”  said junior Blake Sturgeon.

Since it is the start of the season most of the boys have some high hopes to make it to the playoffs along with some personal goals.

Sturgeon said, “ I want to score seven goals since I scored six last year.”

Their team travels to the Front Range for games on Friday August 27, and Saturday August 28.
