Lighting shortens first GJHS football game
The Grand Junction Tiger football team had a stormy start to the season Aug. 18 against Pueblo West.
Pueblo West gained 25 points in the first quarter benefiting from three crucial turnovers, on the way to the 32-0 victory. With 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter, thunder and lightning rolled through the valley, which made the game get cut short.
Once there was a lightning strike within 8 miles of the game, a 30-minute delay was put in place. The game was eventually canceled as the lightning persisted and the timer kept getting reset.
The Tigers record is now 0-1 after the season opener.
GJHS junior Jaden Owens said, “I think our first game opened our eyes. It helped us realize we need to do better at the start of the game. It’s been an ongoing thing that we always start doing good in the second half of the game.”
The Tigers had a record of 1 – 9 in the 2022 season.
The Tigers next game is 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, against the Glenwood Springs High School Demons. The game will be held on the Demons’ home field.
