Spreading Kindness Throughout the Valley

Kindness is Contagious week is all about creating a positive attitude around the school, and community. This past week has had a different day that represents a different stage of kindness.

GJHS, and the community within this town has been through alot this school year. Kindness is something that every individual needs at this point. A simple compliment can change someone’s day, paying a positive attitude forward creates happiness and awareness towards everyone. This week has been organized by GJHS, and Fruita High School’s Student Councils.

“It was a big cooperative effort,” Royanna Crawford, junior, said. “We did our best to include other schools, as well as other clubs here at GJHS like ALT.”

Kindness is Contagious allows people to be more aware of people who have mental illnesses.

“We wanted to specifically address the negative stigma surrounding mental illness,” Crawford said. “We wanted to highlight how small acts of kindness can make a real impact on ourselves and our community, as well as ‘Stomp Out the Stigma” attached to mental illnesses and aspects of mental health”.

Instead of being negative, staying positive will have a great effect on making one’s life better.

“I think this is just what our school needs. To spread awareness, acceptance and genuine kindness. Personally, I feel incredibly passionate about changing the image of mental health. I know others, such as my sister Carissa, and most of the students at this school have this mutual feeling.” Crawford said.

Being aware of others makes you more alert to what’s going on. You may be having a bad day, but focus on one positive thing and therefore you will be happier. Go out and help others if they’re having a bad day too, spread kindness around to everyone. According to Crawford, “it’s time to get out there, and not be afraid to talk about the stuff that really matters!”.

Events like Kindness is Contagious boosts people’s self esteem, it forms a happy aura around the community. If more people participate, “I want people to know that it’s okay to not be okay,”.
